El Cine Plaza, Tucson’s
original Spanish language theatre of the mid-20th Century,
was the cultural center of Tucson’s Mexican/American community. Its
location in the heart of Barrio Historico put it within walking distance
for residents of Barrio Anita on the west and Barrio Libre on the south
side of downtown.
The Fox Tucson Theatre Foundation and CHISPA Foundation will pay tribute to Tucson’s first original Spanish language movie theatre by producing “Cine Plaza at the Fox: Celebrating Tucson’s downtown barrios and Classic Mexican Cinema” to be held on three consecutive Sundays--March 14, 21 and 28th--at the historic Fox Tucson Theatre. Live entertainment and a different short historical documentary on El Cine Plaza will be featured each week along with a Classic Mexican movie. The documentaries will reflect the nostalgic memories that celebrate the Mexican Cinema and the memory of El Cine Plaza and the positive cultural impact it played in the lives of barrio residents, especially during the hard times of the 1930s, 40s and 50s.
In conjunction with this event, the Fox Tucson Theatre Foundation is offering a Cine Plaza-Movie fundraising opportunity for local 501c3 non-profit organizations, allowing them to receive a portion of the ticket sales for these MEXICAN CLASSIC FILMS.
